The Basics

Let’s get down to the basics. Smiling Misery is a visual novel with simple controls that covers complex emotions. Margo’s guilty desires are unhappiness, sadness and all the ills of humankind. The dialogue can be progressed with the space bar, and the left/right arrows help navigate the map. You can also skip the intro for any replays.

Why Should I Play?

Why should you play Smiling Misery? Storytelling is key when choosing a visual novel; the story here is unique, especially with the setting. The art is striking, with a warm color palette and familiar medieval elements with a touch of whimsy. The soundscaping is pleasant, with partial voice acting and occasional ambient noise. Finally, the playtime clocks in at around half an hour, so it is the perfect game to play between longer campaigns.
